What is genre? And why is it useful for filmmakers AND audiences?
What is genre?
A genre is a particular type of category in the media industry, for example on type of genre is Comedy, a sub genre of this is romantic these two are usually grouped together and call romantic comedies or rom coms for short.
One example of a genre is a romantic movie, because the movie is based around romance and follows the ideology behind a romantic film such as flirting, kissing, hugging as well as sharing a bond this film would be a romantic film due to it reaching the conventions for a romantic film.
As Well as a genre being a category the films often follow a similar scenario for example jason comes back in ‘Friday 13th’ the same thing happens to Freddie krueger, this is because they are in the same or similar scenarios will keep happening to keep the viewer intrigued or frightened in a thriller genre, the reason why the viewer might start to watch them is now to see how the film is executed by the director and not to watch the story anymore.
Why is a genre useful for filmmakers?
A genre is use full for a filmmaker because it can establish what actors they might get to play the role of someone, for example if you are casting for a tough looking bank robber you wouldn't cast a 12 year old girl with pigtails you would pick a muscular, masculine and strong willed male with scars and some kind of accent. Another reason why a genre could be useful for the filmmaker is to make sure they stay on track, the reason for this is that if the filmmaker knows the conventions for the specific genre they are producing for they will stay on track and come up with appropriate and relevant ideas for that film.
Another reason why genres are helpful for film makers there is often a structure for a specific genre for example horror, nice happy opening someone finds something or is killed then it jumps to another day or even month then a group of friends end up getting attacked and killed/murdered one by one until usually a girl is left to mourn her fallen friends and loved ones.
Why is genre useful for the audience?
A genre is useful for an audience for many reasons one of which being that if you are a lover of a specific type of genre and film type you can make a short list of all relevant films in that genre. Another reason why genres are useful because they can give you some insight to what to expect from the before they watch the film, this could also help parents decide if the film is suitable for their kid(s) however the bbfc rating is also there to guide them, for example a romantic comedy goes hand in hand with a 12-12A rating depending on what is shoot in the film.

What are the conventions that shape a horror film?
The setting.
Firstly something that can make or break a film is the setting, there is no point having a horror film set in a brightly light park because there’s nothing that adds to the story. If you are making a horror film you could add:
Technical shoots and camera angles.
However no horror film is another trick is camera angles can also help when trying to express the worry or mercy of the victim from a variety of frame styles, for example if you want to make someone feel weak you would show them huddled up in a corner with the villain looking down on them with power and authority. One frame that would help this shoot is a wide shoot, i would suggest this because you can show the victim's face as well as the villains strong shadow overtaking the victim and watch all of the victim's strength be defeated by a horrifying stance from the victim.
Depending on the angle of the shoot this could also make an effective stand off shoot or where the victim has regained strength, power and authority where you can have a vertical pan shoot showing the character rising from the feet of their capture/tormentor and fighting back with all of their force.
Iconography.
The style of your villain can also impact the story and sometimes can also become as memorable as the character, for example Freddie Krueger's glove with knives on, this horrifying scene where he is chasing a young girls while clawing at the wall adds fear and unnerving sounds to the scene making it seem more like an actual nightmare as it was intended to not just another friday night flick that no one remembers.
If you have a villain that is chasing after someone depending on the story you could ever what the costume to be big bulky and uneven or neat tidy and practical in almost all scenarios.
Weapons are also very important, if someone is using a machete you don't want it to be thick and unrealistic you want it to be razer blade thin and realistic.
Themes.

- Isolated places-to add fear from claustrophobia or the act that the villain could be behind you are even rougn any corner.
- Small communities-A small community adds mystery to everyone and the wrong look could condemn them to be the killer or villain even if it is not true.
- Dark and narrow alleys- Dark alleyways add a sense of claustrophobia as well as suspense knowing the villain could show up round any corner or creep out of the darkness at a moment's notice.
- Run down houses/villages-Ran down houses and buildings could be useful because they can add sounds and shapes the scare the person who is running away and help the villain to kind or surprise the victim due to the villain being able to hear and maybe even see through old dilapidated walls, ceilings and floors.

Themes.
- Good versus Evil, a classic standoff between a light and powerful side or a dark crude and aggressive side.
- Depression, where hope is almost out of reach and nothing seems worth trying.
- Madness, where someone is so twisted by their own ideas it rules them.
- Evil, where someone or a group is driven by the suffering and destruction of happiness and protection for others.

Equilibrium.
The equilibrium is where everything is at peace and there is no threat to anyone or thing.
Disruption.
The disruption is where we see the chaos break free and wreak havoc on the piece and almost extinguishes the peace and hope throughout the story.
Realistation.
The realisation is where all of the characters realise that the chaos is happening and is terrifying the victims of the evil plot.
Restoring order.
The restoring order is where order is restored and the evil that once threatened the victim has been banished
Equilibrium restored
The equilibrium restore is where the peace is restored and everyone can go back to their ordinary lives without the need of worry and panic.
Demonstration
Research and describe the 5 stages of a film as defined by Tzvetan Todorov.
1. A state of equilibrium (All is as it should be.)
2. A disruption of that order by an event.
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred.
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption.
5. A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium
I will demonstrate all 5 of these rules in “Star Wars A New Hope”
We see the equilibrium is where the galaxy is safe from the evil crunches of the Galactic Empire.
We see the disruption when the Death Star destroys Andorran which alerts Obi Wan, Luke, Han, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO to the presence of the Empire's new ultimate weapon.
We see recognition when a battle is raised towards the empire and Darth Vader.
We see the rebels try to fix the devastation from the chaos of the fallen planet, and get ready to fight and stand against an order that is wrong and threats the life of others.
The restoration in this story is when the galaxy is briefly at peace for the first time in years
Research and describe the character type which were defined by Vladimir Propp.
Vladimir was a literary critic.
He was the founder of the idea a certain type of character was to be used in every narrative structure.
His theory has influenced many producers to write and produce successful narratives, he also suggested that all fairy tales use a specific narrative structure too.
For example, one of Vladimir’s ideas for the villain is “The villain-fights the heroin some way.” Another idea he has for the structure of a character is “The dispatcher-character who makes the villain’s evil known and sends the hero off.” We can see this in “Star Wars” for example the villain is Darth Vader who fights the Obi Wan Kenobi however Obi wan also plays the dispatcher who alerts Luke to the presents of Darth Vader and his evil.

Fully research the requirements of your role. Include: Responsibility on set and an extensive list of skills required.
Producer.

Producer role, the producer is like a manager whether on or off set. The role of the producer is to make sure the location, food, actors, set and other various tasks are finished and ready. The reason why this is the task of the producer and not the role of the director is to make sure that the director does not become side tracked and can focus solely on their vision becoming reality.
Another role of the producer is raising funding, this means that it's the producers to make sure there is a sufficient amount of money coming into the project.
The producer also needs to assess new ideas from the director to make sure they are all good ideas and are not putting anyone at harm. The producer also needs to make sure all of the scripts are finished and ready for the actors to read and perform from.
Another job for the producer is to make sure all of the original material has been allowed to be distributed as film.
Another role for the producer is to discuss projects and ideas with financial backers meaning people that will fund the shoot so it is able to commence.
The producer also need to be able to employ staff to shoot the program, film or video.
The producer also needs to be able to control the budget for the shoot so the company does not go bankrupt or in debt.
The organisation of shooting schedules is also controlled and maintained by the producer.
The producer also makes sure that health and safety is a top priority and the director does not take any risks that could harm anyone. The producer must also make sure that the film is arrived on budget. Lastly the producer will conduct meetings with the director to make sure that everything that is happening is the closest possible way to the director's vision.

Scene analysis from the joker interrogation scene dark knight.
This is going to be a quick look at the intence interagation scean from The Dark Knight.
In the first few frames we get to see the dark knight appear behind the vigilanti the joker.
The dark knight's first move is to throw the joker's head into a table where the joker states, “ Never start with the head the victim gets all fuzzy”, this shows that he is mocking the caped crusader on his tactics also as he tries to anger the dark knight.
They both briefly talk, before the batman says ”you wanted me, here i am”.
The joker claims “I wanted to see what you would do, and you didn't disappoint.” this suggests that the joker is once again trying to insult his plans by trying to lead the caped crusador to the prison to interrogate him. The joker exclaimed “you let 5 people die” this shows that the joker is again mocking him as batman aims to protect people. The joker says how could letting someone else take the place of a victim is “even for a guy like me that's cold”, batman quickly replays “where is dent”, as he is confronted by a statement saying that people want batman gone so things can go back to the way things where, this could also add another point about how people see the batman as a vigilanti not a hero.
After a few moments of the joker talking batman askes “why did you want to kill me”, as the joker explaints shocked and humered, “I dont want to kill you, what would i do without you”, “what would i do without you?”. After that statement batman explains to the joker, “your garbage, you kill for money.

Research and with examples the conventions/ styles of trailers.
Styles of trilers.
Crime Thriller
Research with a wide range of examples the conventions / styles of trailers
Conventions
A few examples styles for a crime thriller are:
Tension and suspense, one reason why this is important is so that it is able to build up emotion and fear throughout either one scean or throughout the film. An advantage of this is that the audience can become lost in the film instead of thinking ‘oh…I need to sit through another hour of this film’.(1)
Music, the type of music that a crime thriller should aim to use is, low frequency humming or music that increases in volume through the duration of a scean in the film, this will increase the suspense in the movie and make it more interesting. (1)
Crime, there needs to be some sort of crime at some point during the duration of the film to actually make it a crime thriller. The crime could be anything that places a character in danger or makes them run from the police at some point. (1)
Characters, in any crime thriller or most genres there are usually 2 types of characters the good guy who fights for the people and the villain who fights for their own personal agenda that usually end up with the disruption of peace, happiness and tranquillity, this is usually the point in the story where the disruption takes place. (1)
Low key lighting, Low-key lighting is a style of lighting that is used mainly in horror, thriller and crime genre films to add a certain look to the scean wither it is adding power to a character or showing weakness in another character. (1)
Styles
Some styles that are found in crime thriller trailers are:
Editing- going from scean to sean is very important in any type of film and trailer, however in a crime thriller it is important to make the editing quick with little to no transitions to make the film run smother and to make everything look closer together so there are no parts where the audience can get lost or board.
Sound- sound is an important part of any production because music/ sounds adds another level to the depth of the film. The way that music or sounds can create this is by adding effects to a film that could otherwise not be created, for example if you have a scean where the hero is rising up and defeating the villain it would be minimalistic without sound this is why it’s important to add sounds so you can add more emotion into a scean.

Describe the key conventions of your scene.
Some of the conventions that i have noticed in the “Attacked in the Attic “ scene from birds are;
I also noticed some thriller conventions in this scene’ for example;
Small compact area
I think Hitchcock used a small compact area to add the scene that she can not escape easily and to add some suspense whether she would die or escape.
Dark (low lighting)
I think the reason for Hitchcock using a soft lighting is to add depth to the attack as well as adding more curiosity to the scene as well as mystery.
Tention music
I think the reason for him using music that creates tension is to add an effect that could make the viewer feel anxious and on edge.
Montage of shots
I think the reason that he used a montage of shots was to make sure that the scene was as short as possible whilst still being able to give the audience a good idea of what is happening to the victim as well as maintaining a understanding of what is happening around the victim's environment, this would also be a open frame sequence.

Conduct a detailed textual analysis of your scene:
Camera Movement
To begin with at the start of the scene the camera is moving slowly and is panning slowly following the young actress up the stairs towards the attic.
The camera then stays in a static position whatls the actress hears something. In the next shot the camera reveals a gaping hole in the roof of the attic. The camera then shows a glimpse at a flock of birds that have hustled inside the attic. For the rest of the scene there is little to no movement by the camera remaining static for most of the shots.
Camera Angles
Some of the camera angles Hitchcock used in the recording of Birds are;
Firstly, i think Hitchcock used a High Angle-Shot at the beginning of this scene was to show that the young woman was going to become powerless in this scene, this could also be an example of foreshadowing how weak she would become.
Secondly, i think Hitchcock used a close up when she was opening the door was to show her hesitation, for example if Hitchcock used a medium close up of her opening the door without showing her hand the hesitation might not of translated as seamlessly and as noticeable without him using a close up shot of her hand and the door handle.
In addition i think Hitchcock used a medium close up, to show her curiosity as well as to show a good amount of the scene without focusing on the surrounding room.
Lenses
We can see from the attack scene that he uses more than one type of lens, however i am not to sure how many although i have a feeling it could be 2.
I think that throughout the scene he uses a two camera lenses, i think for the close up shots he uses a lens that is designed specifically for close up, i think he would've used this type of lens for some shots is because to maintain focus whilst being really close to the actress he would need a lens that specialises in this to maintain clarity and focus.
The second lens i think he would use would be a lens that is designed to work for medium shots, i think he would've used this so the shot was in focus whilst still maintaining a clear view of the background. I think this lens would of been used during some of the high angle shots to show that the background is skewed and on a angle without making the scene to busy or to lackluster.
Sound
In the first few moments of the scene there is no audible audio, this holds tension in the air as well as suspense. The first audible noises are tee actress gasping and the heavy flutter of bird wings. The noise of fluttering birds is continuous throughout the scene adding eary and horrible noises to keep the audience interested and to create a hatred towards them in this scene.
Lighting
Lighting is quite low key in this scene as there is no overexposed footage reveline unrealistic shadows and making the shoot look artificially lit. There is one source of lighting that we can see in the shoot which is used as a prop also, this prop is a rather big touch this is used on set as a lighting source, the touch is also not over exposed meaning the audience will receive a really well produced overall scene.
Colour
There is a significant lack of color throughout this scene, this might not be intentional however, this could be because of the technology in the time period. However the color scheme could be intentional due to the kind of scene it is, for example if you are making a realistic film you would most likely not want to have bold colorful colors this would make the film more of a humorous feeling film not a horror /thriller film, i think Hitchcock new this so he decided to go with a dull background with black silhouettes with a bland colored dress and clothes for the actress.
Color grading
The colour grading of the overall has quite a mundane feeling, this could be a result of the colour gamut for the camera being low at this time period. However I think that the overall scan was washed with a slight warm tinge.
I think to improve the overall aesthetic of this scene, Hitchcock could of increased a gray tinge to add detail and to make the audience feel like that this is more of a horror film and less of a film to watch near Christmas time, I think this because the colour grading on a scene changes the feeling dramatically so I believe to achieve a colder more sinister feeling to the scene he could've used a darker colour wash to show the brutality of the scene through more than just the actress's performance however convincing or unconvincing it was.
Editing Style
The editing style for this scene was centered around what was happening in and around the scene, this means that the camera will show more of the scene in a smaller amount of time this editing technique is call montage shots. I also that the editing was faced paced and clean there was no unnecessary transitions or unrealistic color effects.
Editing is very important when it comes to making or break a film/ TV show and every other type of media, this shows how important editing is in a film regardless of simplistic nature of the edit or how heavy the editing style is. I think for Hitchcock's film 'birds’ and I think he made this film as memorable as iconic and I believe this film will stay around and maintain its status as an amazing all around film to inspire young creators to create and develop their own style over time.

Reaserch a wide range of preduction techniques you expext to use
What techniques do you expect to use:
Why i will aim to use different lenses, i will use different lenses so i can add a depth of field for the scenes that require one.
Why i will be efficient, i will be efficient by recording similar chunks of footage at one after another meaning i will keep recording footage that follows after the previous scene, scenes like this are usually interrupted by editing by adding a face or another part of footage in between these chunks of film. I will aim to be efficient by recording like this over all saving battery life and time.
The reason why i will aim to be efficient is to save time and battery life this will have a positive effect on the shoot because the camera battery should not need replaced as many times plus the less time we are there the more opportunities we have in the day to focus on other pieces of work if required.

What inspires me through the filmmaking process?
Popular short film genres:
Some of the popular Short films i have seen include infocus sharp footage, great actors, high pitch sounds in necessary areas to add depth however there is one problem with some of the short films i have seen, it seems to be hard to identify some of the genres and even in some instances the convention to be able to back the genre up.
What inspired me whilst i was developing ideas to contribute towards ‘The Letter’, whilst i was contributing towards the final iteration of ‘The Letter’ i thought it would be a good idea to use a current topics which are popular within the teen community to be able to create a gripping and interesting storyline which is also relatable.
I was inspired by all of the brave youths who have been able to come out regardless of fear and anxiety, this passion that people can feel inspired me to use this as a key convention for this film so that there is a modern storyline that will be able to apply to a wide range of age groups from teens to 40s.
I was also inspired by the freedom that we as young film makers are granted and i felt like that to make the most of this opportunity i needed to fight a topic that has terrified people across the ages for fee of being judged or even the fee or being disowned.

Using a range of primary research methods investigate your target audience and a key practitioner?
How will you conduct your primary research?
The way i will conduct my primary research to find out what my target audience will be is by designing a questionnaire, depending on my results this will determine an approximation for my target audience demographic.
Who is your demographic?
After receiving 30 responses to my survey i have been able to identify an approximation of the ages demographic that my film is 11-20 years old.

After receiving 30 responses to my survey i have been able to identify an approximation of the ages demographic that my film is 11-20 years old.
This shows that out of 45 people 64% of people are aged between 11-20 years old.
However out of 29 people 17 of which watch Family Drama genre based films ranging from 1-6+ times a month, after looking at my results from my survey 15 out of 17 people watch Family Dramas out of enjoyment with 2 people watching them for curiosity and educational purposes this shows that Family Dramas are popular for down time and pure enjoyment to escape reality and not something that seems to be boring and lackluster.
For a large majority of the people that filled out my survey it appeared that film is the only type of media they seem to consume this genre on this means that there is a high chance that the audience have created a strong liking towards this genre and the way that they consume media.

Who is your key practitioner?
My key practitioner should be aged between the ages of 11-20 years old, however due to the type of film i will be making i will need to strive towards a bbfc rating of 12A.
Why do you think this?
The reason i think that this film would be aimed towards people that are aged between 11-20 is because the type of film i am making would be emotionally unsettling to people aged below 11.
Why is your BBFC rating 12A?
The reason i have focused on making this film a 12A rated film is so the film is almost in the parameters for the age demographic interested in Family Drama movies, the reason i had to make this film a 12A rating was because of the emotionally challenging storyline of the film.
